How much is Gift Aid worth?

Gift Aid lets a charity reclaim basic rate tax on donations from UK taxpayers. That adds 25p to every £1 donated, so a £100 donation becomes £125 for the charity.

What is a Gift Aid declaration?

A declaration is the donor's confirmation that they are a UK taxpayer and want the charity to claim Gift Aid on their gifts. It can be given in writing, online or verbally, and the charity must keep a record of it. DonorBoost collects declarations online and keeps them against each donor.

How far back can we claim Gift Aid?

Charities can usually claim Gift Aid up to four years after the end of the accounting period in which the donation was received. If you have missed claims, it is often worth going back through older bank data.

Can schools claim Gift Aid on voluntary contributions?

Schools that are charities, or have an associated charity, can claim Gift Aid on genuine voluntary donations. Payments that are really fees, or that buy something in return, do not qualify. DonorBoost lets you set exclusion rules so those payments stay out of your claims.

What is the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS)?

GASDS lets charities claim a top-up on small cash and contactless donations of £30 or less where no declaration is held, up to a limit of £8,000 in donations per tax year. It sits alongside normal Gift Aid claims.

Why not just use a spreadsheet?

Spreadsheets work until donors pay by several methods, declarations go missing, or a donation is claimed twice. DonorBoost matches bank data to donors, tracks which claim each donation went on and saves up to 80% of the time each claim takes.

Does DonorBoost work with Xero?

Yes. You can connect your Xero organisation and map donations to your nominal ledgers.
